seral is a new digital literary journal, growing out of a desire for more dialogue between writers and editors. In addition to supporting polished pieces through careful editing and individualized design practices, we want to offer a home to pieces that show promise and writers who are eager to work on revision with our editors. Our hope is that this process will make room for voices with different access to workshops, and provide ample space for messy innovation in fiction.
We are currently accepting fiction, hybrid-genre, and mixed media submissions (under 10,000 words) on a rolling basis. Though our first issue will be unthemed, we are particularly interested in works that explore ideas of disaster, transition, and renewal. Send us a Word document with typical formatting conventions – double spaced, page numbers, etc. Include your name, a brief bio, and the title on the first page, then email your submission to: litseral (at) gmail (dot) com.
A seral community is a system that forms an intermediate stage in nature’s recovery: lichens covering bare rock after erosion, wildflowers seeding in the ashes of a forest fire, shrubs and saplings sprouting in a mown field. These landscapes are not the same as what came before the disturbance, nor a blueprint of what’s to come.
